How Our Espadrilles Are Made

A real espadrille is still built the way it's always been: by hand, one pair at a time. Here's what goes into it.

1. The sole

Natural jute fiber is spun into rope, then coiled and pressed into the shape of the sole. For wedge and platform styles, the coil is built up gradually, layer by layer, until it reaches the right height — every wedge you see starts from this same flat coil.

2. Sealing the base

Once shaped, the jute sole is bonded to a non-slip rubber base using heat and pressure. This is what gives the shoe grip and durability without losing the flexibility of the natural fiber underneath.

3. The upper

The upper — canvas, leather, suede, or raffia, depending on the style — is cut and shaped by hand. Skilled stitchers then attach it to the sole using traditional hand-sewing techniques, the same craft that's been passed down between generations of artisans.

4. Finishing

Ribbons, elastics, buckles or laces are added last, along with a final shaping step to make sure the fit is right before the shoe ever reaches you.

It's a slower process than machine-made footwear, and that's the point: it's what makes every pair durable, breathable, and genuinely handcrafted in Spain.
