How to Care for Your Footwear
How to Care for Your Footwear
Espadrilles are easygoing shoes, but a little care goes a long way — especially for the jute sole, which is the most delicate part. A few simple habits will keep your pair looking good for many summers.
The golden rule
Never machine wash or fully soak your espadrilles. Water breaks down the jute fibers in the sole and can permanently warp the shape of the shoe.
Cleaning the sole
- Let any dirt or mud dry completely before cleaning — scrubbing wet dirt pushes it deeper into the fiber.
- Brush off loose dirt with a soft, dry brush.
- For stains, dab lightly with a barely damp cloth. Avoid soaking the jute itself.
Cleaning the upper
- Canvas or fabric: wipe with a cloth lightly dampened in mild, soapy water, then wipe again with a clean damp cloth to rinse. Let it air dry.
- Leather or suede: use a proper leather/suede cleaning product rather than water, which can strip natural oils and dry out the material.
Drying and storage
- Always air dry away from direct sun or heat — direct heat can fade color and dry out the sole too quickly, making it brittle.
- Stuff damp shoes with paper to help them hold their shape as they dry.
- Store in a cool, dry place when not in season.
With a bit of care between wears, your espadrilles will keep their shape, color, and comfort for a long time.
